The price of imported pork is half as cheap as in the country

Tin tức

The selling price of imported frozen pork is currently ranging from 60,000-90,000 VND per kg, which is half the price of domestic meat.

As noted by VnExpress , the selling price per kilogram of imported frozen pork at supermarkets and shops ranges from 60,000-90,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the type of bacon, young ribs... This price is one and a half times more expensive than the price. imported (customs declared price) and less than half of the domestic fresh meat price. For example, each kilogram of pork belly (hot meat) in markets currently fluctuates from 130,000 to 140,000 VND; tenderloin ribs 140,000-150,000 VND; pork leg 150,000 VND...

Recently, both the quantity and price of imported pork to Vietnam have decreased. According to a report by the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in July alone (August, there are no statistics), Vietnam imported more than 10,000 tons of chilled and frozen fresh pork, worth nearly 21.6 million USD. . Import volume and import price (customs declared price) both decreased compared to the same period in 2021, by 31.2% and 36.8% respectively. On average, each ton of imported frozen pork costs USD 2,153 per ton, equivalent to over VND 50,000 per kg.

Accumulated in the first 7 months of this year, the amount of pork imported is more than 55,200 tons, worth more than 117 million USD. This level decreased by over 40% in volume and nearly half in price compared to the same period last year. The main meat import markets of Vietnam are Russia (26.7%), Brazil (37.5%), Germany (15.5%), Canada (10.2%)...

According to the Import and Export Department, imported pork decreased in volume due to the slowdown in consumer demand, while the domestic pig herd recovered, the domestic pig price has gradually reached a reasonable level.

The weak consumption of imported meat is also due to the Vietnamese people's preference for "hot" meat (meat that has just been slaughtered and sold at markets and supermarkets).

On the other hand, according to survey results of market research firms, Vietnamese people tend to eat less pork . Accordingly, according to statistics of Ipos, a multinational market research firm based in France, the amount of pork Vietnamese people consume in a year decreased from 30 kg to 23.5 kg in April this year.

Data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also show that each Vietnamese person consumes less than 26 kg of pork per year, down 4-5 kg a year compared to before the pandemic.
